Radiation Medicals

Radiation is used everyday in a wide range of jobs and activities. Although radiation can hep many people it can also bring many potentially harmful exposure risks which should be controlled effectively.

Ionising radiation can occur as either electromagnetic rays or particles. It also occurs naturally from the decay of natural radioactive substances and can also be artificially produced.

People can become exposed to radiation externally either from a radioactive material or generator, or internally by inahling or ingesting radiocative substances. Exposure may also occur through contaminated wounds. Exposure to radiation can have adverse effects on health which can cause anaemia and may damage cells which long term can raise the risk of developing cancer.

It is important to ensure that those working with radiation or in a radioactive environment are monitored regularly in line with The Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999 to ensure that they are kept within the dose exposure limits.

What we do

We have a tailored questionnaire for individuals working with radiation which provides us with the basic information about their exposure risk. This is followed by a clinical examination by our HSE Appointed Occupational Health Doctor which includes taking samples to check the employees exposure to ionising radiation. The samples are analysed by our laboratory and the results sent on to you.
